It was over 20 years after the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC) established a presence in the Maritimes before a Pentecostal church in Charlottetown, P.E.I. was created, but since its humble beginnings in 1955, Calvary Church has maintained a prominent Christian role in the provincial capital.
In the beginning
Under the slogan, Christ is the Answer, a group of about ten people attended services conducted by a man named Mr. Alvin Radditz in the Orange Lodge Hall on Richmond Street, with the first service on Nov. 20, 1955. Radditz, having not been an accredited PAOC minister, was eventually replaced by Rev. Sheldon Myers of Halifax, N.S. by the PAOC Maritime district superintendent about a month later.
Rev. Myers was an older man with much experience. His year-and-a-half stay was designed to stabilize the PAOC church while a permanent replacement could be found. During his tenure, Sunday School classes were introduced along with mid-week prayer services which, to this day, still play a key role in drawing people to the Lord through the church. The congregation had grown to about 15 members when he left in March of 1957.
The name Calvary Temple is adopted and a new church is born
Rev. Vic Jackson, a younger preacher, was sent by the PAOC to succeed Rev. Myers. Rev. Jackson and his wife, Joan, came to the church in Charlottetown on March 9, 1957 and he quickly established a presence with his youthful spirit and charisma. His emphasis on outreach and community-oriented ministries resulted in a rapid growth of the congregation. As such, a new building was needed and purchased for renovation on Harley Street to accommodate the growth. The building would take on the name Calvary Temple. It was during this time a board of directors and new departments were established.
During the renovation phase of the Harley Street church, God answered many prayers and took care of the needs to complete the project. One example of His work came when prayers were answered and a piano was donated to the church. Calvary Temple officially opened its doors with the first service on Sept. 2, 1957. As time went on, the church grew in the community and gained increased exposure with its many outreach programs.
A new location for Calvary Temple
It was eventually decided a new location for Calvary Temple was needed and the former RCMP lot on Upper Price Street was the answer. The RCMP barracks were to be converted into apartments to supplement the church income with Rev. Jackson and his wife occupying one of the suites. Much like the renovations of the Harley Street church, the new church took hard work, dedication, and most importantly prayer and faith from the congregation, to complete. The first service was held on Jan. 18, 1960 with many PAOC officials and about 250 people in attendance.
With Rev. Jacksons resignation in August of 1960, Rev. Charles Benn arrived and would lead the direction of Calvary Temple for the next six years. Under his leadership, Sunday School expanded and growth was rapid due to the new central location of the church. The church also welcomed notable speakers and crusades such as the Jimmy Snow Crusade of 1962 and the Billy Graham Crusade of 1964. The guest appearances in addition to the outreach programs gave Calvary Temple even more exposure to the community and as a result, more growth occurred. A weekly radio program on CJRW was also in full swing during this time.
After Rev. Benn resigned in January of 1966, a number of temporary pastors were brought in. On July 23, 1967, Rev. Herman Trenholm arrived from Littleton, N.B. and would give Calvary Temple stability and growth during his nearly five years of service.
Many significant events took place during Rev. Trenholms tenure. He was very active in the community and organized such initiatives as prison ministries for convicted criminals in the area as well as drive-in services where people could attend while in their cars. A radio program on the well-known P.E.I. station CFCY also began. There was continued growth as a result.
During this time, God made His presence known in the form of many miracles. One such miracle took place during a baby dedication for Stephen Young. Young was born with a crooked neck and on the Sunday he was dedicated, his mother brought him to the front of the church and requested prayer for him. Trenholm led the congregation in prayer and instantly Youngs neck was straightened without any recurring problems.
In August of 1972, Charlottetown and Yarmouth, N.S. swapped pastors with Rev. Robert Cross coming to Calvary Temple. During his tenure, the CFCY program further developed and more special appearances by preachers and singing groups were scheduled. The exposure with the radio program coupled with the special guest appearances resulted in more people attending the church. Programs within Calvary Temple further developed and grew, highlighted by a youth group program on Friday nights. Another noteworthy event came in June 1977 with the church mortgage being paid off. All of these events led to the possibility of a new home for the Calvary Temple congregation. It was just a matter of where the best possible location was available.
The new, and current, location of Calvary Temple is decided
Rev. George Power from Millbrook, Ont. was voted in as pastor of Calvary Temple on July 1, 1978. Rev. Power, being well organized and having a decisive personality, quickly settled the location issue and prime property was purchased in December of 1978 on the corner of Highway 1 and 2, where the church still stands to this day.
The sod-turning ceremony took place on June 18, 1979 with construction by Cathedral Development for the church starting two months later. The modern-designed building would allow for services, sports, and Sunday School activities in addition to an increased capacity level for the congregation. Like the churches before it, many of congregation assisted in the building phase to help cut costs. Because the church was in a transit phase as work started on the new church and the property on Upper Prince Street was sold, the services were held in the Confederation Centre Lecture Theatre during this time. This was a blessing as more people attended in the non-church environment.
On June 30, 1980 the newly-constructed Calvary Temple church on the corner of Highway 1 and 2 in Charlottetown, P.E.I. opened its doors and was dedicated to the service of God for the purpose of spreading the gospel in the city. Cable 10, a local cable station, televised the event and the service featured guest speaker Rev. David Mainse of 100 Huntley Street. In addition, Mayor Frank Moran and a number of provincial government officials were in attendance to celebrate its construction.
The new building provided opportunities in many areas of the church and its ministry. Additional departments were created and others further developed. Many youth-oriented programs flourished in the new facility as Sunday School and Crusader programs grew and were well attended in the new gymnasium. The most significant program development at Calvary Temple during this time was the choir. Under the direction of Powers daughter, Margaret, music became a focal point in the ministry of the church and Calvary Temple became well-known in the Maritimes. As a result, there was significant growth.
God puts His ever-present hand on the church
December 28, 1980 became a landmark day in the history of Calvary Temple when God touched the pastoral staff and saved Rev.Power and his colleagues from disaster. The collapsing of the gym in the new building occurred just seconds after assistant pastor Rev. Bullerwell stepped out of the room and seconds before Rev. Power had reached the church parking lot. No one was injured and a new gym was constructed.
God made his presence known once again at Calvary Temple in July of 1982 with a divine healing. A local man and father of five girls, David Morrison, was diagnosed with a large and inoperable brain tumor and was slated for cobalt treatments. One Sunday his wife stood up during the service and asked for prayer of healing for her sick husband. The next Sunday Morrison was back in church and fully healed from the life-threatening illness. With this miracle came exposure and restoration for many people who heard the story. Calvary Temple grew as a result. A television show on Cable 10 called ÒRoad to Calvary was created and provided a chance for ministry to Islanders in their own homes.
Periods of transition and changes
Over the next 20 years, many pastors made significant contributions to Calvary Temple. Rev. John Raymer pastored the church in 1988 with Rev. Phil Taylor following in 1989 to 1993. Rev. Harlyn Purdy would lead the church for the following five years until 1998 when Rev. Vaden Compton assumed leadership and saw the church pay off its mortgage in 2000. Rev. Andrew Price, with his emphasis on missions work, coordinated many missions trips to places like Haiti to reach and send the message of God.
Rev. Edwin Rideout came to Charlottetown in early 2006 and served as lead pastor for over two years, leaving in the summer of 2008 . His passionate nature and clear vision were well received by the congregation. A name change for Calvary Temple was also adopted during this time to Calvary Church.
The present and future of Calvary Church
Rev. Phil Taylor accepted the call for a rare second tenure in November 2008 to replace the outgoing Rev. Rideout. His familiarity and passion for the church and its members have made the pastoral transition seamless on many levels. A number of initiatives to break the walls of the church down in an effort to open up to the community are on the way as God leads Calvary Church forward with His vision through the new pastor.
Faith
That people from all different walks and backgrouds would begin walking in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We desperately want to be the catalyst that helps that happen in peoples lives.
Hope
That the local church would be the hope of our community. That people would see in us the solution to their problems:God. As we encounter people, we would restore hope into hopeless lives and in hopeless world.
Love
That love would be the language of our church. That all people would feel accepted and appreciated when they chose to journey with us. That people would know us not because of our programs, but because of the love we have for one another.
